Sheriff Marlin Gusman

Under Sheriff Gusman’s leadership, the Orleans Parish Prison has maintained a record of security and efficiency through a period of unprecedented growth.

He knows the first duty of his office is to keep violent criminals locked up and off our streets. Every day, Sheriff Gusman manages a daily prison population that has increased in four years from 1,500 to 3,500 inmates. To deal with the need, Sheriff Gusman oversaw a $20 million overhaul of OPP facilities in 2009, making them larger, more modern and safer. With an unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of his community, Sheriff Gusman also regularly donates his time and inmate work hours to community projects across the city. Inmates donated 24,750 hours of labor for community service last year, and the Sheriff’s annual Thanksgiving community dinner drew about 2,000 guests.
