New Ideas For A
Safer Future

"I'm tremendously impressed with Sheriff Gusman's performance during Katrina.  He stayed his post, in command, with no regard for his own safety, and displayed great strength and calm during a crisis.  I was there-and I saw what happened.  He's earned the respect of law enforcement officials everywhere."

-Attorney General and Former Sheriff Charles Foti

The Criminal Sheriff's Office is working day and night to prepare New Orleans for recovery.  We are rebuilding, repairing and securing our jail.  Sheriff's Deputies are patrolling neighborhoods to keep them safe from looters.  We are assisting residents in returning to their homes safely.

We have enhanced the role of ministers for faith-based rehabilitation programs, and emphasize work release for non-dangerous inmates to help with cleanup and recovery. We are implementing more effective drug rehab programs.

We won't allow the hurricane to slow the progress we've been making with this vital office.
