A PROVEN LEADER |
In the
last four years, Sheriff Marlin Gusman
has guided the Orleans Parish Prison
through unprecedented growth, all while
maintaining a record of safety and
efficiency.
In 2009, the OPP took in more than
66,000 prisoners, which is remarkable
considering New Orleans’ population is
just around 320,000. Every day, Sheriff
Gusman manages a daily population that
has increased in four years from 1,500
to 3,500 prisoners, representing
everything from car thieves to violent
offenders.
Sheriff Gusman has handled the growing
need for prison space by working hard
and dedicating himself completely to his
job. |

|

worked tirelessly to improve the Orleans
Parish Prison. His record of building
and advancing the functions of the
Sheriff’s Office are unprecedented.
In February, 2009, the OPP completed a
nearly $20 million overhaul of its
facilities, making them larger, more
modern and more secure. Sheriff Gusman
also oversaw the completion of a $4.5
million temporary Intake & Processing
Center (IPC) in June, 2008, that
facilitates the efficient booking and
handling of up to 250 individuals daily.
Sheriff Gusman has laid out a vision for
the future of the Orleans Parish Prison,
with plans in the works for a new
permanent Intake and Processing Center,
a new Administrative Center, a 1,200 bed
housing unit, a new Work Release Center
and even a new temporary housing
facility, which will reduce crowding and
aide in the secure management of the
growing prison population. |
